What is an IBAN and why do I need one?

This answer comes from students, not from METU. It is written up from what students report and it is labelled as experience, never as policy. Confirm anything with a deadline, a fee, or a legal consequence against the official source below.

An IBAN is your international bank account number, a single string that identifies your account for transfers. In Turkiye it starts with TR followed by digits. You receive your IBAN when you open a bank account, and you share it to receive money (for example transfers from family). Keep your IBAN handy but treat it as sensitive account information. Your bank provides your IBAN in the app and on account documents.
